T.O.S.S. – A Story of Letting Go

I hadn’t written in over a month. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I was completely overwhelmed—emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

Standing in the shell of the life I had built in Toronto, I had to make an impossible decision: to toss away 90% of my personal belongings. The remaining ten percent came with me to Vancouver. The rest? Gone.

What is it like to throw away 90% of your life?

It’s unbearably hard.

A single bottle of unopened avocado oil cracked me open. I had bought it for the simple joy of cooking before my mom’s stroke, back when I thought I’d live in Toronto for years to come. Holding it, the grief rushed in. I wasn't crying over oil; I was mourning a future that no longer existed.

Ultimately, my entire past fit into a 1.5-tonne dumpster. 3,306 pounds.

But amid the pain of purging, something softened. With the help of close friends, I turned a garbage pile into a donation pile.

  • I gave a set of plates I’ve carried for 20 years to a grandmother newly moved to East York.

  • I gave my favourite tray of rainbow crystals to a young stranger whose energy caught my attention.

In those moments, I realized you can feel abundant even in the middle of deep pain. Generosity is a form of healing.

The truth is, I didn’t want to leave Toronto. Life made the choice for me. The emotional shock was so intense that my body temporarily shut down, and sleep stayed far away, even after landing in Vancouver.

But the point of T.O.S.S. (Throw. Out. Sentimental. Stuff.) isn’t to justify or reason. It’s just to let go.

I even uncovered an envelope from 2003 that I had safely moved across the country, assuming it was my Master’s Degree transcript. When I opened it, it was just nested, empty envelopes. A literal symbol of holding onto nothing. It went straight into the recycling bin.

I am still tired. But I am also lighter.

I am learning how to love myself not through accumulation, but through release. The courage wasn't in keeping it all. The courage lay in releasing it, standing there empty-handed, and still choosing to walk forward.

P.S. I am immensely grateful to the friends who stood by me to complete this monumental task. Why the move? See the first article of this series.
